Social Media, Dangerous?

Social media has gone through many changes since becoming more popular. Some changes for the good, and some for the bad.

Social media is becoming very intrusive, at least in terms of the marketing that is involved with social media. When you talk about a product you are interested in, you suddenly see advertisements for it all over your social media. Since your phone is always listening to you and it shares the information it gathers from eavesdropping, you get random advertisements on Facebook or Instagram for products you had just mentioned. Although some people do not see this as being intrusive, it can appear that way. With all of the changes that have been made to social media, not only is your privacy compromised, it is becoming even more of a necessity to be cautious of what you are posting.

There is a responsibility involved with using social media. You have to be cautious about what you post on social media because posting some things could have serious consequences. For example, you and your family could go on vacation together, and if someone saw images of this trip on your social media, they could take advantage of you by robbing your home. Also, with social media comes the problem of cyber bullying. People use social media as a means to post hateful comments about others or share photos to make fun of how someone looks. This also causes you to have to monitor what you post to make sure you do not become a part of someone’s hateful agenda. Although the use of social media can be harmful, it can help bring light to serious topics or issues.

The usage of social media can be beneficial and have a positive impact; this is the case with Sophie Long’s situation. Sophie is a nine-year-old girl who had been sexually abused by her mother’s boyfriend. Sophie’s father has been fighting with family court to get custody of his daughter. This fight is costly. Her stepmother set up a GoFundMe to help raise money for the legal fees, and through the help of social media, they have surpassed their goal. Also, an Instagram account (@standwithsophie_) was set up in order to spread awareness about Sophie’s story. Through the use of social media, Sophie’s voice was heard, and this has helped her and her siblings be saved. However, despite the positives that social media has brought with it, there are numerous negatives.

It seems that social media does more harm than good; its negative effects outweigh the positive effects. Social media is very addictive and has become a major problem among today’s youth. Children are becoming obsessed with these applications, and are constantly scrolling through countless videos and pictures. It is harming our youth, and in the future this problem will constantly grow as new applications are developed. Additionally, social media is actively helping to increase the problems we have with cyber bullying, and this will still remain a problem in the future.
