Twitter: Changing the Way Information Is Provided
Twitter is a social media platform that has been used primarily for “being social.” However, Twitter can be used for so much more besides just posting updates about someone’s life. It can be used for political purposes, updating news instantaneously, bringing awareness to a specific topic, and to market products. Twitter has a wide variety of purposes, more than other social media platforms.
Twitter is a useful tool for journalists, politicians, and organizations in that it can be used to get information out quickly. It can be used to provide a brief piece of information immediately to the audience. The key here is that it is immediate or instantaneous. In other words, Twitter helps them update their audience (followers) with important information in under 280 characters. However, tweets can spread like wildfire; therefore, misinformation can be spread rapidly.
For example, Twitter was used to provide information about the Boston Marathon attack that occurred in 2013. Twitter was used to provide immediate information about what was happening at the time. It was used to help provide information to the rest of the world about the impact of the bombing. It was used to help families and friends search for their loved ones. Also, Twitter helped people connect and share their condolences after this tragedy.
Recently, Twitter has been used to update everyone, across the world, about the COVID-19 pandemic. There is constantly new information being released about the pandemic as it continues to spread and affect the lives of many. Although it is not being discussed as much as it used to be, it is still a relevant topic, especially since the number of cases are increasing in some places again. France is currently in a lockdown due to the pandemic again. Thus, Twitter has been and is still being used to update the world on new facts about the pandemic in order to save lives. However, the information that is tweeted may be true or it may be false; this is a problem with Twitter. Since anyone can tweet about the pandemic, everything you read may not be true. On the other hand, Twitter has gotten better about providing fact checkers and warnings on tweets.
In addition, Twitter can be used for organizational purposes. More recently, Twitter has been used to bring awareness to the Black Lives Matter movement and organization. It has been used to supply information about when and where protests and rallies will take place. This information is provided instantaneously and is spread very quickly. Also, it helps to quickly give information about the Black Lives Matter movement as a whole. Twitter delivers information about what occurs at the protests, whether it be through images, videos, or brief pieces of writing. However, all of the information that is tweeted may not be true. People need to be sure to read into the stories for themselves before retweeting it and spreading false information too.
This Twitter project discussed cancel culture and how it should be put to an end. Cancel culture has become a very prominent issue involving Twitter. Information spreads rapidly on this platform which has now led to people beginning to cancel famous people due to their past. For example, recently a relatively prominent person on TikTok, named Benji Krol, became a victim of cancel culture. He was taken advantage of by his former boyfriend and one of his friends who lied about his age. This led to people bullying him for being a “child groomer,” which was not even true. His character was being destroyed, and this began to harm his mental health. Cancel culture can be extremely harmful to others and it should not exist.
The three Twitter accounts that were followed were Kanye West, Ellen Hopkins, and Taffy Brodesser-Akner. I followed Kanye West because I never would have followed him. I followed Ellen Hopkins because she is one of my favorite authors. She writes books that discuss very relevant topics including gun control and immigration. Finally, I followed Taffy Brodesser-Akner because she had previously tweeted an article that discussed cancel culture. Also, she is a writer for the New York Times Magazine, so I figured she would be useful to follow.
This project demonstrated how different Twitter is from other social media platforms. Twitter is a very powerful tool that needs to be used carefully. People have the power to tweet information instantly, and they could contain false or misleading information. This platform, like others, needs to be used with caution in order to ensure that misinformation is not being spread. However, since Twitter is a place where some people receive all of their information, people need to constantly be aware that what they read and post may not be entirely accurate.
